Bikash Nakarmi received Ph.D. from  Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), South Korea, majoring in Optical communication and networks. In his Ph.D. and post-doctoral position, he has mainly focused on the optical communication system and realizing various optical units using SMFP-LDs and surface plasmonics based bio-sensors. His main contribution during Ph.D. is the design and analysis of all-optical devices with a specialization in Single Mode Fabry-Perot Laser Diode (SMFP-LD). The design is beneficial in speed, power consumption, and cost compared to other laser technologies such as Multi-Mode Fabry-Perot Laser Diode, Semiconductor optical amplifiers, and others. In the bio-sensors field, he and his team has proposed a novel method of detecting diabetes using non-invasive techniques through the saliva.

Currently, Prof. Nakarmi is working as a Professor in Key Laboratory of Radar Imaging and Microwave photonics at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, NUAA. He mainly focused on generating different RF waveforms ranging from a few GHz to several THz for RADAR detection and imaging; interference management techniques in a multi-radar environment; WDM-enabled memory-accessing techniques; Integrated Silicon Photonics; and Surface plasmonic-based Biosensors. His research works are funded by the National Science Foundation of China, University grants, the Collaboration Grant of Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan, and a Collaboration Grant from Ministry of Science and Education, Kazakhstan. Before joining to NUAA, as an Assistant research professor at KAIST, he has expanded his research field to biosensors using surface Plasmonics Resonance with a slit-grove-slit structure. The preliminary result has shown promising opportunities for application in diabetes detection and glucose level monitoring non-invasively. He also has experience in the industrial research environment as a research and development manager at InLC technology Korea. He contributed to the optical system’s patent analysis and mathematical analysis, which includes gratings, prisms, and some basics about the LCoS for the wavelength selective switch, wavelength blocker, and attenuator. In summary, all his work experiences and teaching after my Ph.D. graduation is related to photonics and closely related to the Advanced Science Research Center’s photonics area. Before his graduation, He also worked as a Lecturer in several colleges in Nepal, Technical coordinator in WOTEK, Dubai, and Skyline Airways in Nepal.

Prof. Nakarmi’s work has been published in several journals, mainly on TMTT, Optics Express, Photonics Technology Letter, and Journal of Lightwave Technology, and featured in SPIE newsletters and conference proceedings. He has published about 100 articles, mainly in IEEE/OSA. He has given numerous invited talks at international conferences and universities, including an ITU workshop for energy-efficient optical networks. Besides research settings, He has an immense interest in teaching classroom environments. He has several years of teaching experience in graduate and undergraduate level engineering courses in Nepal, Korea, Rep. of., and China, varying from analog filter design to digital signal processing, lasers, optical communications, and microwave photonics. He has been awarded the researcher for 2017 and the best teaching faculty for 2020. Also, He has been featured as an Outstanding International Expert in Jiangsu news, Jiangsu, China. Besides, He also played a leadership role in collaboration with international universities for joint projects, MoU, establishing research centers, start-up companies, and Technology transfer programs. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and OSA.

Prof. Nakarmi possesses efficient research design and interdisciplinary research collaboration skills with universities and industries, student advising (supervised many students as a professor, associate professor, research assistant professor, and Postdoc), and student-friendly participatory teaching practices.
